Qualifying for Membership

Membership

Public schoolhouse employers must written report all of their employees to PSERS. Whether you are a full-time or part-fourth dimension employee, a record (business relationship) is created for you at PSERS. Not everyone with an account however, will qualify for membership.

Total-Fourth dimension Employees

If you are hired as a total-time employee, membership with PSERS is mandatory. Members who work total-time contribute a percentage of their salary towards a retirement benefit from the first mean solar day of employment.

Part-Time Employees

Part-time employees, unless you waive membership in PSERS, must meet certain qualifications to become a PSERS fellow member. The initial qualification requirements must be met within i financial year, not beyond multiple fiscal years. If y'all were hired equally:

Part-Fourth dimension Salaried, you are eligible for membership from your showtime day of employment.
Part-Time Hourly, y'all must piece of work at least 500 hours to go eligible for membership.
Part-Time Per Diem, y'all must work at to the lowest degree 80 days to become eligible for membership.

Your employer may deduct your contributions from your first twenty-four hours of employment or begin deductions after you qualify for membership. In one case you qualify for membership, deductions become mandatory and you retain that membership until a pause in membership.

Employer Participation with PSERS

You are potentially eligible for membership in PSERS if you lot are an employee who works for:

A Pennsylvania public schoolhouse district
An intermediate unit of measurement
An expanse vocational-technical or career technology school
A participating charter school
A customs college
A state-owned college or academy
Pennsylvania State University
The State Board of Pedagogy
The Thaddeus Stevens State School of Engineering
The Pennsylvania State Oral Schoolhouse for the Deafened

Charter Schools - Charter schools are considered public schools but not all participate in PSERS. If you are a fellow member of PSERS and make up one's mind to brainstorm employment with a charter school, y'all should verify that the charter school participates in PSERS.

Colleges - Employees working for a community college, Penn Land University, or other state-owned Academy may more often than not select a retirement plan from amid a few plans, including PSERS. Your employer should be able to discuss with yous all retirement plans bachelor to yous.

Qualifying for Membership When Working for Multiple Employers

Solicitor
Md
Dentist
Consultant
Psychologist

Not -Qualifying Job Positions

School crossing guards are prohibited past law from membership in PSERS. Only a borough, a get-go- or second-class township, or a third class city may apply persons in such positions even though a school commune may presume the hiring and oversight of these employees.

Any employment in a private school, including colleges and parochial schools, does non qualify for membership in PSERS. PSERS is a retirement plan expressly for public schoolhouse employment and employers directly connected to public school employment.
